Have you ever wondered why Apple didn't assign command key shortcuts to all of the finder's menu items? Beats me, but here's how you can get around this inconcenience and perform such functions as restart, make alias and empty trash without touching your mouse. All you need is System 7 and ResEdit 2.1 or 2.1.3.
I originally uploaded a hack for System 7.1's Finder, but the new 7.5.1 update replaces the hacked resources in the Finder with new ones that are different, and my original hack cannot be used on Finder 7.5.1. So I've created this new hack.
First, make a copy of your finder and drag it out onto your desktop. Open Finder 7 Keyboard Shortcuts. Within the window, you'll see an fmnu resource. Click on it once and choose Copy from the Edit menu.
Next, while still in ResEdit, open your finder copy. The first item in the third row is the fmnu resource. Click on it once and choose Paste from the Edit menu. A dialog box will show up asking if you want to replace the resources with the same ID's. Click Yes, close windows, save changes and quit ResEdit. Drag your original finder out of the system folder, replace it with the copy, rename the copy Finder, and restart your Mac. Now you'll have command key shortcuts for all of the finder's menu items. If all works well, trash the original finder.
